Raumschatten – Hans Kupelwieser
Stadtgalerie Klagenfurt | April 3, 2026
Today, while the city was soaking up the sun on outdoors terraces, I found sanctuary in the quiet halls of the Stadtgalerie Klagenfurt. I had the entire exhibition to myself—a rare, private moment with the works of Hans Kupelwieser.
The exhibition, titled "Raumschatten" (Space Shadows), is a masterclass in how light, material, and volume interact. As a photographer, I was immediately drawn to his play with shadows. His famous photograms—massive works created without a camera—reminded me that light itself is our most powerful tool.
The highlights for me were his "metal origami" sculptures. Using a fascinating process called Metal Inflation, he transforms cold aluminum into soft, folded shapes that look like crumpled paper or inflated cushions.
My personal favorites:
The matte blue and matte red aluminum pieces at the entrance—their texture is so deep and velvet-like, absorbing light in a way that feels almost organic.
The Plexiglas sculptures that play with transparency and hidden layers.
Walking through these rooms felt like a creative "reset." It’s a reminder to look closer at the edges of things, at the shadows they cast, and the stories hidden in the folds of metal.
Exploring Textures

"Exploring Textures: The clinical purity of skincare contrasted with the raw, wild elements of Carinthian nature. Shot on location."
A quiet wander through the Carinthian wild. Under the soft, velvet grey of an overcast sky, the moss breathes and the textures speak. Finding the perfect clinical light in nature's own studio — captured on iPhone.
